For Katsuya Shimizu, suppressing noise, vibration and harshness goes beyond achieving mere silence. With the all-new Mazda3, it was about achieving a refined and quiet ambiance. The obsession to achieve the ideal comfortable interior space in the Mazda3 led to about 50 design and engineering solutions that all contribute to deliver a class-above driving experience. By cleverly dampening vibrations, improving manufacturing processes that make the new chassis even more rigid, reducing the number and size of holes that let noise inside the cabin, and using new sound-absorbing upholstery that traps sound and turns it into heat, the team of Shimizu-san was able to realize newfound comfort and refinement in the all-new Mazda3.
Revel in the superior sound of Mazda Harmonic Acoustics. Designed by Koji Wakamatsu and his team of engineers for the all-new Mazda3, the revolutionary audio system is created to further enhance the listening pleasure of both driver and passenger. After countless hours of benchmarking music tracks between hi-fidelity studio setups and that of the Mazda3, Wakamatsu-san and his team succeeded in creating a natural and rich sounding cabin by altering the speaker positions and limiting sound reflection, a setup even audiophiles will envy. Because of their efforts, music now serves as an inspiration that gives life to every drive.
Each feature in the Mazda3’s well-appointed interior is meticulously crafted. Feel the richness and warmth of genuine leather using Mazda’s own grain in the cabin. Every stitch, every soft surface enhances the tactile connection between car and driver. A connection so relaxingly natural, driving becomes an intuitive affair.
The quest to deliver the true ‘joy of driving’ begins with the senses. For Nobuyuki Fukui, achieving premium levels of quality and craftsmanship is a never-ending mission to eliminate any displeasure of the five senses—sight, touch, hearing, smell and the overall physical experience of driving a car. “We reduced visual noise in the interior design, without losing any of the vehicle’s functionality. Every point a driver comes in contact with inside the cabin has a soft, high quality feel,” shares Fukui-san. From the lively click of the cabin switches to the uniform quality of white light in the interiors, Fukui-san’s team aimed to achieve a semblance of unity in every sensory element.
From the moment you sit in the driver’s seat, you’ll enjoy the perfect fit in the Mazda3, and it only gets better from then on. Feel the air of premium elegance and an atmosphere of heightened comfort throughout the vehicle. The Mazda3’s finely crafted interiors are sure to make the time you spend on the road rich and colorful.
Our human-centric philosophy permeates the Mazda3 through the Skyactiv Vehicle Architecture. Maximizing the use of human abilities and combining it with meticulous engineering and design result in driving that can only be described as effortless and joyful.
Driving the Mazda3 feels natural—as if you’re walking on your own two feet. This is the ultimate expression of Jinbai-Ittai or horse and rider as one. Each element in this vehicle is finely honed to enhance the bond between the car and the driver.
The ultimate goal of Kodo: Soul of Motion is to create an emotional bond between the car and the driver. The all-new Mazda3 takes Kodo to a higher level by expressing a new form of elegance inspired by Japanese aesthetics. This is the embodiment of the adage “beauty is rich in its simplicity.” Lustrous shapes capture movement. Beautifully contoured body panels reflect the surrounding environment. The play of light over its surfaces create interesting forms. Breathing life into each vehicle—this is Mazda’s design philosophy.
Two vehicles so distinct, you would think they were different models. Bold and sporty, the sportback conveys anticipation and vitality. By eliminating character lines on its body panels, light moves gracefully throughout its body, thus creating a sense of drama. The sedan depicts effortless elegance, on the other hand. Its body gives the impression of a single flowing brushstroke that conveys sophistication. This classic sedan renders refinement and calm.
When designing the Mazda3, Chief Designer Yasutaka Tsuchida made sure he and his team set aside any constraints to make an ideal compact car, while ensuring the sportback and the sedan each had a unique appeal. The result of Tsuchida’s design: cars with One DNA, but have two personalities. “They have different expressions and physiques, but they’re twins born from the same DNA.”
